Objections
Not everyone welcomes the building of wind
farms of this sort, particularly on land. Objections typically involve either noise or
visual impact, although there have been many successful objections based on the belief
that wind turbines kill a disproportionate number of birds. There is, however, other
evidence to suggest that bird kills involving wind turbines are no worse than those
involving collisions between birds and other man made objects. Turbines that are sited
with this particular objection in mind are far less culpable than other engineered
structures; for example, conventional high tension electricity transmission pylons and
their associated cables.
One
development that substantially removes the noise / visual impact objection, while at the
same time providing the kind of wind speeds and available area for a large number of
turbines, is the tendency to build these installations offshore.
